La velata By Raphael

“La velata” or “La donna velata” (which means “The woman with the veil”) is one of the most famous portraits by the Italian High Renaissance master painter Raphael.

The subject of the painting is believed to be the same woman in another work, La Fornarina, and is also alleged to be Raphael’s lover. Raphael is said to have had many affairs, but a permanent fixture in his life in Rome was “La Fornarina”, Margherita Luti, the daughter of a baker (fornaro) named Francesco Luti from Siena who lived at Via del Governo Vecchio.
